Never Be Afraid to Try Something New!

If there was one thing that the students of Holy Cross learned this weekend was that one must always keep an open mind and never be afraid to try something new. After a very relaxing and sun-filled weekend on the beach in Viareggio, our Sunday night meal in the nearby city of Lucca soon taught us this lesson.

Sunday we traveled to the nearby city of Lucca. Lucca is a walled medieval stronghold of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries deeply involved in the Ghibelline and Guelph politicking of the day. Today, there is a lot of cultural and historical insight that the city offers amongst a new growing artistic culture. On Sunday evening we had “cena” in Lucca’s museum of Contemporary Art. As expected a very “contemporary” meal was served.

The meal consisted of eleven different courses, each about the size of two forkfuls, and three types of wine. The first seven courses consisted of some type of raw or lightly cooked fish such as shrimp, cuddle fish, and caviar. The next two courses were centered on meat as we tasted some steak tartar served on a roasted pine tree bark and a delicious fried beef brain (This was probably the most experimental dished of the meal and as you can imagine it was not the most popular dish)! We finished off the meal with lemon custard served with artichoke and a “burrata” (type of creamy mozzarella) infused ice cream.

In hind sight the meal was actually very good. You just needed to be willing to try something new!

Ciao for now!

A Presto!
